Biography

Aki Nishiguchi, a native of Japan, is an active performer and dedicated teacher based in the vibrant music scene of Los Angeles. She completed her Doctorate of Musical Arts in oboe performance at the University of Southern California (USC), studied under the guidance of esteemed oboists David Weiss, Joel Timm, and Allen Vogel. While at USC, Aki's musical interests extended beyond traditional repertoire, as she dedicated herself to the exploration of New Music and Early Music. She actively participated as an oboist in the USC Contemporary Music Ensemble for four years and collaborated with the Los Angeles-based contemporary music group, What's Next? Ensemble. Aki's love for Early Music led her to immerse herself in the study of performance practice and period instruments, including the baroque oboe, renaissance shawms and recorders, under the guidance of Adam Gilbert, Rotem Gilbert, and Paul Sherman. As an early woodwind player, she has performed with notable early music ensembles such as Ciaramella, Musica Angelica, Bach Collegium San Diego, and the California Bach Society.

In addition to her active performing career, Aki is a passionate educator, currently serving as the director of the Performing Arts Academy Advanced Music Program at Diamond Bar High School. Her role involves teaching music theory, aural skills, music history, and coaching numerous chamber ensembles, guiding aspiring musicians towards excellence. Aki's commitment to education extends to her positions as a faculty member at Pepperdine University, Idyllwild Arts Academy, Mt. San Antonio College, where she imparts her knowledge and expertise as an oboe instructor.

Aki's musical contributions can be heard on several recordings, including a release by Yarlung Records with Ciaramella and two albums featuring newly composed guitar concertos with USC guitar faculty, produced by Doberman-Yppan Publishing.
